In any survival situation, water is the most essential resource for your body’s survival. You can survive for weeks without food, but only a few days without water. However, finding clean and safe drinking water may not always be an easy task.

When it comes to sourcing water in a survival situation, you must always assume that the water you find is contaminated. Contaminated water can be filled with harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, and even chemical pollutants. Drinking untreated water can lead to severe illnesses like diarrhea, dysentery, and even death.

Water purification is crucial to remove or kill these harmful contaminants, making the water safe for consumption. By ensuring that the water you drink is purified, you significantly reduce the risk of falling ill and increase your chances of survival.

Methods of Water Purification

They work by physically trapping the contaminants as water passes through the filter. However, portable water filters may not be effective against certain chemical pollutants.

4. UV Water Purifiers: UV water purifiers use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. They are quick, effective, and easy to use. However, they rely on batteries or electricity to function, which may not be readily available in a survival situation.

Gathering Water in the Wild

When sourcing water in the wild, it’s essential to choose your water sources wisely. Look for flowing water, such as streams or rivers, as stagnant water sources are more likely to be contaminated. Avoid water sources near agricultural or industrial areas, as they may contain chemical pollutants.

While it’s important to know different methods of water purification, I highly recommend including multiple methods in your survival kit. Having redundancy in your water purification tools ensures that you can adapt to various situations.

In addition to the methods mentioned above, consider learning about natural water filtration techniques like constructing a sand and charcoal filter. These can be valuable skills to have when you don’t have access to commercial water purification products.
